Production planning & the Business of Musical Theatre

Our Founder, David Goldsmith

David Goldsmith is a master storyteller whose work has shaped Broadway, film, and television. As the co-writer of Motown The Musical alongside Berry Gordy, he helped bring the legendary story of Motown to life—a production that ran for years on Broadway, in London’s West End, and on tour, earning four Tony nominations along the way. His lyrics for Imagine This were performed on London stages and later captured on film for PBS.

Beyond Broadway, David’s storytelling extends to television and film, where his lyrics have become part of iconic moments. He wrote My Once Upon A Time for Descendants 3, a song that resonated with millions around the world and won multiple awards. His original lyrics also shaped Disney’s Wish Upon A Christmas, A Tale of Two Witches, and Mickey and Friends Trick or Treats—three holiday films that earned Emmy and Kidscreen Awards. His work underscored Queen Latifah’s climactic scene in the film Set It Off with the song Up Against the Wind, cementing an unforgettable cinematic moment.

But David’s passion goes beyond writing—he is deeply committed to elevating young voices and helping the next generation of storytellers achieve greatness. He believes that the best way to refine your craft is by learning from those who have lived it, who understand the rhythm of a great story, the heart of a song, and the power of a well-placed lyric. For young writers and performers, interacting with Broadway-level talent isn’t just inspiring—it’s foundational. It’s the difference between dreaming and doing.

David’s work—whether in professional theaters, on streaming platforms, or in workshops with aspiring writers—reflects a lifetime dedicated to storytelling and a deep belief in passing that knowledge forward.
